The sight of the leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, lounging on the famous green benches in the chamber of Parliament during yesterday's tumultuous Brexit debate has inspired countless social media posts, many of which show the lugubrious politician in the same pose set against very different backgrounds. One of our favourite satirists, Cold War Steve, has created a mock coronation scene depicting political strategist Dominic Cummings as the kingmaker (Jacob is lying prostrate, of course, on a set of palatial steps as Tory rebel MPs and North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-Un look on).
Meanwhile, a wry commentator on Twitter known as Gaz Weetman has posted a pic of Rees-Mogg as Ophelia taken from the epochal 19th-century painting by Sir John Everett Millais. Jacob looks so dreamy floating down the river (possibly away from the European Union), prompting the high-profile BBC journalist Jon Sopel to comment: "Clever... never thought of JRM as a pre-Raphaelite muse before."
