William Kentridge honours Africans in the Great War

A taster of William Kentridge’s latest project, which tells the story of the hundreds of thousands of Africans forced to work as bearers of weapons in the First World War, is on show at Art Basel ahead of its unveiling at Tate Modern in London next month. The Pool Ahead (2018), a charcoal drawing on display at Marian Goodman Gallery’s stand, depicts a waterfall surrounded by thick vegetation. It is part of a new moving-image work by the South African artist that will be projected inside the Turbine Hall (11-15 July). The project, The Head & the Load, which also includes music, dance and mechanised sculptures, is due to travel to the Park Avenue Armory in New York and the Ruhrtriennale, northern Germany, later this year.
