A Louis XV ormolu mounted ebony writing table once owned by Baron Gustave de Rothschild quadrupled its low estimate of £200,000, selling for £818,500 at Christie’s in association with De Pury yesterday. The 1760s piece of furniture was one of 306 lots being auctioned from the Lambert art collection, which spans three centuries and eight categories, including Chinese erotic paintings and a desk and chair set by Donald Judd. The sale made a total of £15m (est £10.8m-£16.8m).
