This was one of four works sold at Phillips de Pury’s evening auction by Kit Finance, a Russian investment bank. According to a spokesperson for Kit, the sale of its art is “part of an ongoing programme to sell its non-core assets in order to repay the money borrowed” from the government and its main stakeholder.
Mark Bradford, Kryptonite, 2006, sold for £337,250 (est £200,000-£300,000), Christie’s
The layered collages of found objects by LA-artist Mark Bradford have been building a strong following, and the artist currently has a show at White Cube’s Hoxton space (until 13 November). At Christie’s, this work on paper sold within estimate (hammer price £280,000) and a larger-scale, more recent canvas, White Painting, 2009, sold at Sotheby’s the following evening for £361,250 (est £300,000-£500,000).
Andy Warhol, Diamond Dust Shoes (detail), 1980, sold for £1.6m, est £1.3m-£1.6m, Sotheby’s
Sotheby’s is saving its big-ticket Warhols for the contemporary evening sale in New York this month, including Coca-Cola (4) (Large Coca-Cola), 1962, estimated to bring between $20m and $25m. Still, the London evening sale had four Warhols, including one from Jerry Hall’s collection, all of which sold around estimate. This work was bought by London dealer Alan Hobart for a client.
