The Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has given notice that 4 April 2007 will be the closing date for applications to reclaim works of art looted by the Nazis and now in state possession under less stringent rules for evidence of ownership introduced in 2001. The policy was an attempt to encourage victims to make claims; there have been 45 applications since it was introduced. After the closing date, the burden of proof will have to conform with the civil code, making claims more difficult. The ministry hopes that the imposition of the closing date will encourage claimants to come forward. For information: www.restitutiecommissie.nl.
