An upcoming exhibition at the Los Angeles branch of Hauser & Wirth is all rather meta. L.A. Story (12 September-4 January 2025) is a group show inspired by the 1991 romantic comedy in which Steve Martin’s character searches for meaning in “a city famously clichéd as a cultural vacuum”, according to a gallery statement.

Martin, known for films such as Parenthood and Father of the Bride, is working in dialogue with Hauser & Wirth’s senior curatorial director, Ingrid Schaffner, and senior director Mike Davis to put this love letter to the Californian metropolis together. It will draw on the city of angels’ rich artist base, featuring works by the likes of Mark Bradford, Ed Ruscha and Vija Celmins.

Martin says in a statement: “I’m thrilled that L.A. Story is the focus of so many wonderful artists and [will be held at] a wonderful gallery, Hauser & Wirth, which is just across the street from the Troubadour, where I first stepped foot on Santa Monica Blvd, which began my L.A. sojourn.”

We’re looking forward to Steve’s loving take on La La Land.
