‘I am pro Crocs’—British Museum director Nicholas Cullinan reveals all in quick-fire Instagram interview

Social media film puts new chief on the spot, highlighting his favourite object and guilty pleasure

The newly appointed director of the British Museum, Nicholas Cullinan, faces a quick-fire round of questions on Instagram (courtesy of the BM’s innovative social media department). Puns and dad jokes make him laugh apparently. But what about the movie which last made him cry? All of Us Strangers starring Andrew Scott. Asked which living person he most admires, he cites the campaigner Doreen Lawrence. “I am pro Crocs. Just think about David Hockney,” he adds. He also admits to putting jam first on his scones (rather than cream—controversial). At the end he even promises, with tongue in cheek, to give the sparky interviewer a pay rise. The post drew mixed responses. The former editor of UK Vogue, Edward Enninful, wrote that “this is genius”. But another contributor pointed out that “this was dangerously [Alan] Partridge”, referring to the cheesy fictional TV and radio broadcaster brought to life by the comedian Steve Coogan.
