The fabled photographer and legendary chameleon Cindy Sherman, pops up in two very different guises in the latest ad campaign for the Marc Jacobs label (spring/summer 2024 campaign). Sherman is seen sporting Jacobs’s Crystal Canvas Snapshot crossbody bag in the eye-catching photographs snapped by fellow photo giant, Juergen Teller. In one image, Sherman looks pristine in a blonde wig, tweed two-piece and a thumping pair of boots; in the other pic, she glares at the camera in a long dark wig, looking ever so slightly unkempt. Sherman’s post on social media shows both personas shifting uneasily in front of Jacobs HQ in New York, giving furtive glances at the camera (the Insta entry prompted a flood of comments analysing the fashion/art crossover including a gushy acknowledgment from Jacobs himself: “I love you so much. So grateful to you. Always.”). Sherman’s appearance coincides with a major show of works at Hauser & Wirth New York (until 16 March) featuring 30 new depictions of the artist at her grotesque best.
