Some artists are crying out to be the subject of a Broadway musical. One of them is the Art Deco pioneer Tamara de Lempicka whose racy antics will be brought alive on stage at the Longacre Theatre in New York next spring. “[The musical] is fierce and queer and traces the first half of the 20th century through the eyes of this very complicated and ambitious and visionary woman,” director Rachel Chavkin told The New York Times. Lempicka is still making waves 43 years after her death. Last month her coquettish portrait of her daughter Kizette, Fillette en rose (around 1928-1930), sold for a record $12.5m ($14.7m with fees) from the estate of Jerry Moss, the late record producer, at Christie’s New York.
