More than 60 galleries will take part in the 2023 iteration of Frieze New York (17-21 May), including a handful of newcomers from all over the world.
The fair will feature many of the expected global mega-galleries, including the four largest: Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Pace and David Zwirner. The fair will also feature stands from many of New York’s leading galleries, including Alexander Gray Associates, Andrew Kreps Gallery, 303 Gallery, Karma, James Cohan, Michael Werner, Ortuzar Projects and Tanya Bonakdar Gallery.
They will be joined by galleries from 27 countries, including White Cube, Perrotin, Gallery Hyundai, Goodman Gallery and Xavier Hufkens. Newcomers to the fair include Arcadia Missa, Emalin and Tiwani Contemporary from London, Neue Alte Brücke from Frankfurt, Silverlens from Manila (the gallery opened a Manhattan outpost last summer), Mitre Galeria from Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, Seoul-based Whistle and Derosia from New York.

The number of exhibitors for the 2023 fair is consistent with the last two editions, since the event moved to The Shed in Hudson Yards in 2021 after a one-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of galleries taking part in this year’s fair is the maximum that The Shed can accommodate. In 2019, the fair’s last year in its original venue—a giant tent erected on Randall’s Island—it featured more than 190 exhibitors. The number of galleries showing at Frieze New York peaked in 2016, when 202 galleries participated.
This year marks the 11th edition of Frieze New York, which is now the smallest of Frieze’s fairs. Frieze London 2022 featured more than 160 stands (not including the concurrent Frieze Masters fair) and Frieze Los Angeles in February welcomed more than 120, while last year’s inaugural Frieze fair in Seoul featured 100 stands. Frieze is competing with other events in an increasingly hectic art market calendar in New York in May, which includes Tefaf New York, the Future Fair and Independent the week before, concurrent fairs like the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair and Nada New York, as well as the major spring auctions at Christie’s, Phillips and Sotheby’s.
Still, the fair appears determined that its boutique size shouldn’t diminish its importance, and this year promises some headline-grabbing booths. Michael Rosenfeld will stage a thematic presentation around the 50th anniversary of Roe v Wade, and Spruth Magers and Karma will have a joint solo stand of Pamela Rosenkranz, who is opening a major commission on the High Line Spur just steps from the fair. The Artist Plate Project, which sells artist-designed plates to raise money to feed unhoused people, will also launch at the fair.
