The 58th edition of the Carnegie International—the longest-running recurring exhibition in the US and a bellwether moment for the country’s contemporary art scene comparable in significance to the Whitney Biennial though, per its name, much more global in scope—will feature works by more than 100 artists, collectives and artists’ estates.
The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the organiser and main venue of the exhibition (known as the Pittsburgh International on its founding in 1896), revealed the list of artists selected by curator Sohrab Mohebbi today. Working under the title Is it morning for you yet?, which is a Mayan Kaqchikel greeting often used in lieu of “good morning”, artists in the exhibition will highlight the wide range of differences in human experience.
Included in the exhibition are famous artists, including Claes Oldenburg, Joong Seop Lee, Etel Adnan, Rafa Nasiri and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, renowned contemporary artists such as LaToya Ruby Frazier (a native of nearby Braddock, Pennsylvania), Daniel Lie, Carlos Motta, Susan Meiselas and others. Artist collectives, a focus of the just-opened Documenta 15 quinquennial in Kassel, Germany, will also have a presence at the Carnegie, including the California-based Los Angeles Poverty Department, the Indonesian group Hyphen—, the Mexican group Colectivo 3 and the Vietnam-based Dogma Collection of propaganda art.

“The artists participating at the 58th Carnegie International, many of whom are showing art in the United States for the first time, combine a practice of reconstitution, reminding us that not only do our histories of pain and longing bind us, but furthermore, our narratives of resistance and survival help us reimagine the world,” Mohebbi, who was recently named as the director of SculptureCenter in Queens, New York, said in a statement.
Mohebbi heads a curatorial team for the 2022 Carnegie International that includes associate curator Ryan Inouye and curatorial assistant Talia Heiman, and also recieves input from a four-member curatorial council and a three-person advisory group. A full list of participants is available here.
