Jupiter Artland sculpture park in Edinburgh has opened a virtual version of its site in Minecraft, the addictive video game that allows players to create structures out of virtual blocks—think of it as digital Lego—and set off on their own wacky cyberspace adventures. Visitors to the Minecraft version can take in all of the park’s sculptures, from Antony Gormley’s Firmament (2008) to Tania Kovats’ boathouse piece (Rivers, 2010). A pilot version launched at Easter when around 100 young people (youth) took part in a virtual Easter egg hunt. “Once all the eggs were found, children began building their own wonderful looking creations opposite Jupiter Artland’s front gates using Minecraft tools. One rainbow-coloured tower celebrated the NHS and others took the form of bunny rabbits, daffodils and proposals for impossible buildings,” says Claire Feeley, head of exhibitions. Budding tech/art buffs can also partake in a sculpture design competition. Jupiter Artland has been accessible via Minecraft since 2016, thanks to an innovative partnership with tech experts at Edinburgh Napier University, though the first generation of the game was only available for visitors physically on-site at the award-winning park.
