With Easter egg hunts an impossibility for many, some alternative egg-spotting is on offer on Easter Monday from the ever-resourceful artist Gavin Turk. He is inviting everyone to join him at 6pm BST for a live, personal virtual tour of his Hackney studio which is housing an (ahem) “Eggshibition” of his recently-created Cosmic Egg works.
The egg is a classic symbol of new life and these works form a double signifier of renewed existence, having first started out as makeshift studio tables made from the oval shapes left over as residue after cutting out plywood stretchers for Turk’s earlier egg canvases. Now they have been repurposed as ovoid artworks in their own right, their surfaces bearing the chance marks of the many other pieces of Turk’s art previously created on their surfaces.
During the tour of his resurrected eggy-exhibits, visitors will be invited to interact with Turk on the now ubiquitous platform Zoom as he muses on ideas of recycling, waste materials, abstraction and – of course – his ongoing fascination with eggs. Happy lockdown Easter!
