The US artist Jenny Holzer has made a work to mark the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, creating a text inscribed on a series of skateboards commissioned by the Skateroom company.
The skateboards, produced in a limited marble edition of 25 boards (£8,500) and a wood edition of 500 (£300), are emblazoned with the word "Impeach" (both editions are due to launch 5 February, available through Highsnobiety website). Holzer says: “Some moments should never be forgotten, some moments deserve to be set in stone. Make America Righteous Again.”
Holzer previously collaborated with the Skateroom, producing a limited edition of aluminium skateboards to help fund AIDS awareness campaigns, raising in total $23,100 for the NYC AIDS Memorial. According to its website, Skateroom donates 5% of the turnover or 25% of the profit from every sale to social skate projects worldwide, benefitting "at-risk youth through education and skateboarding", says a spokesperson.
The House of Representatives impeached Trump on 18 December on charges of abuse of power and obstructing Congress. Trump is accused of withholding US military aid to pressure Ukraine into investigating the Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden. Senators are expected to acquit Trump in a vote to be held later today. Holzer tells The Art Newspaper: “Maybe Trump will be impeached again—or the board can be an impeachment tomb stone.”
UPDATE (5 February): The text above was amended to reflect the fact that the skateboards are emblazoned with the word Impeach only (rather than a longer text provided by Jenny Holzer).
