London
Jan Debbaut, former head of collections at the Tate in London, has told The Art Newspaper that he is “gearing up for the opening in October next year of the Ullens Centre for the Arts in Beijing’s Dashanzi Art District (798 Factory) as the new chairman of the board of the Ullens Foundation”. The centre will be the first private museum for both Chinese and international contemporary art in Beijing, according to Mr Debbaut, “based on probably the biggest and best collection of Chinese art...in the world,” he says. The collection belongs to Guy Ullens, the Belgian ex-diplomat, who is known to have acquired works by artists such as Fang Lijun, Zhang Xiaogang, Chen Wenbo, Shen Xiaotong, Guo Wei, Yan Lei and Zhou Tiehai.
