Adding to his growing collection of Donald Trump memorabilia, the artist Andres Serrano has purchased a fake dollar bill showing Hillary Clinton behind bars, which was signed by the US president at a rally in Florida.

Serrano bought the object through the online sports and celebrity marketplace Steiner Auctions, based in New Rochelle, New York, for $5,017 (including premium) on 24 March. The signature was authenticated by the autograph specialists Beckett and is "a fine example" of Trump's hand, according to the auction house. "This is sure to be a conversation (or argument) starter in any collection," the lot description reads. The apparent producer of the novelty banknote, American Art Classics, also offers "highly collectible" toilet paper printed with Trump's face.

Serrano says the signed dollar bill will be part of a forthcoming exhibition in New York of works based on the 45th US president, The Game: All Things Trump which will open in two weeks. The show will take place in "a non-traditional venue" in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, according to a spokesman.

This new acquisition comes just a few weeks after Serrano paid $1,880 at auction for a miniature wedding cake, given as a party favour at Trump's 2005 wedding to First Lady Melania. Serrano has touched on Trump before through his work, having photographed the former real estate developer and reality television star in 2003 for his America series. Whether the forthcoming show will take a political stance is not yet known, however, Serrano does say: "I think I bought the Hillary For Prison bill just in time. The chant is back to 'lock her up!'".
