If you think the Miami Beach crowd knows how to have a good time, you should check out a new documentary on Jewish retirees living it up in South Beach during the 1970s. The Last Resort, co-directed by the Miami collector and ArtCenter/South Florida exec Dennis Scholl and film-maker Kareem Tabsch, is based on photographs by Andy Sweet and Gary Monroe, who captured the pensioners engaging in a variety of social activities including beachfront dancing, sunbathing and singing The Star-Spangled Banner while wearing bathing suits. As photographs began to percolate out of private albums during the making of the film, which hits theatres in New York today (21 December), “people kept coming up and say to us, that’s my bubbe, that’s my nana,” Scholl says. “Everybody’s nana wound up in South Beach.”
