Somerset House flies the flag for Charlie Brown

There are some compelling pieces in Good Grief, Charlie Brown! (until 3 March 2019) at Somerset House. In the exhibition, which looks at the impact of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts cartoon strip (everyone on planet Earth must be aware of Snoopy the dog), the UK artist Ryan Gander presents a new film, plus a flag designed by his four-year-old daughter to fly over the London institution. But the punchiest piece must be This Charming Charlie by Lauren LoPrete, who uses lyrics by The Smiths in her reconfigured Peanuts comic strips. The Oakland-based artist faced a legal battle over copyright, but Morrissey, the band’s frontman, came to her rescue. Record companies including Universal Music Group have since authorised LoPrete’s Peanuts mash-up, the show’s organisers say.
