Unseen photography gongs awarded to Jaakko Kahilaniemi and Alexey Shlyk

The winners of one of the photography scene's most prestigious award, the Ing Unseen Talent Award, have been announced. "The incentive photo award for new talent, launched six years ago, encourages emerging artists to explore the boundaries of contemporary photography and helps them kick-start their career," say the organisers, the financial services company ING and Unseen Amsterdam. The Finnish photographer Jaakko Kahilaniemi has won the ING Unseen Talent Award Jury Prize with Nature Like Capital, and will receive € 10,000 to invest in a new project. Kahilaniemi says that his work "attempts to make peace between humans and nature". Judges for the jury prize include the artist Fiona Tan. Alexey Shlyk from Belarus has meanwhile bagged the Public Prize, which is selected by an online vote, and will receive a commission to create new work for the ING Collection. All of the finalists spent two months under the tutelage of the high-profile UK artist Isaac Julien, adhering to the theme of New Horizons: Exploring the promise and perils of the future. The works of all five finalists—including Pauline Niks, Eva O'Leary and Dávid Biró—are on show at the Unseen fair in Amsterdam (21-23 September).
