Unlike Anything Else, State of the World and Dare-Flair—these are the three categories in which you could win $5,000 tonight at Nick Cave’s Freedom Ball, part of his exhibition The Let Go (until 1 July) at the Park Avenue Armory. Attendees are invited to dress to impress as well as “werk the floor”, and there is a fourth prize for overall top look. Cave, who conceived of the event, will be among the judges of the drag ball along with fellow artist Mickalene Thomas, the art consultant Racquel Chevremont, Paper Magazine’s editor Mickey Boardman, and the designer Adam van Eeckhout. The event aims to create “a refuge for guests to celebrate their freedom and individualism on their own terms,” says Rebecca Robertson, the president and executive producer of the Park Avenue Armory. Drawing inspiration from voguing balls, the event is a pinnacle of Cave’s overall vision of release through dance.
