Passengers on the London Underground are in for a treat this spring with new tube maps out today (21 May) designed by the legendary nonagenarian artist Geta Brătescu and Paris-born Marie Jacotey. Brătescu’s work, part of her Game of Forms series (2009-present), graces the 28th edition of the Pocket Tube map. “This work comprises vivid pink cut-outs with graphic, hand-drawn, black markings. Brătescu describes this collaging technique as ‘drawings with scissors’,” a statement says. The 92-year-old Romanian artist’s profile is skyrocketing thanks to her Tube art, and presentations at Documenta 14 and the Venice Biennale last year. For the fourth edition of the Night Tube Pocket map, Jacotey depicts a young man looking through his bedroom window, evoking night time solitude. The map commissions are part of a year-long programme dedicated to women artists launched by the commissioning organisation Art on the Underground.
