The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, said in 1912 that “we are all agreed on one thing—the subject of masturbation is quite inexhaustible”. This saucy topic is examined in a new exhibition at London’s Freud Museum opening today (Solitary Pleasures, 18 April-13 May), which features spunky works by artists including Chantal Faust, Antony Gormley and Annie Sprinkle. Freud pondered the power of masturbation in his studies of sexuality, and the show’s organisers champion the art of self-pleasuring “as a solitary pleasure, as opposed to a solitary vice”.
