Three artists exhibiting in Art Basel in Miami Beach’s Positions sector—A.K. Burns, Jamal Cyrus and Mariela Scafati—have been shortlisted for the BMW Art Journey, a prize that supports emerging artists. Brooklyn-based Burns was selected for her new installation Weather Report at Callicoon Fine Arts, Scafati for her canary yellow work Handcuff Secrets at the Buenos Aires gallery Isla Flotante was chosen for STANDARDZENBLŪZ II, a project that includes collages made from old copies of Jet magazine at the Inman Gallery’s stand.
The next step is for the shortlisted artists to submit proposals for their ideal art journey; the winner is due to be announced early next year. The current BMW Art Journey prize winner, the Los Angeles artist Max Hooper Schneider spent months exploring the world’s coral reefs as part of his journey. Previous recipients of the prize, a collaboration between Art Basel and the automotive giant BMW, include Samson Young, who represented Hong Kong at the recent Venice Biennale with his multi-media installation, Songs for Disaster Relief.
