In preparation for Art Basel in Miami Beach, I have consulted the tarot and called upon the ineffable energies of the universe to show me the past, present and future for four types of visitor: artists, collectors, dealers and critics. Today’s predictions focus on the critics.
Their journey begins with the Two of Pentacles, a card that depicts a man who seems to be dancing while juggling two coins. This tells me that there has been a lot of effort put into the managing of their past finances, although it has been done well and a great deal has been accomplished on a rather small budget.
We continue to the present with the Ace of Pentacles, a depiction of a floating hand holding a coin with an open, flowered door in the background. This tells me that the critics are quite content, having much of what they desire at this time.
Finally, we come to the future with the Ten of Wands, showing a man who is carrying a great burden yet still pushes forward. This tells me that, while the critics are content, there will be pressure to take on more responsibility. Not only will their contentment fade, they will also begin to question why they ever became critics to begin with.
