The Miami Beach-based photographer Amy Gelb is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a frank look at women’s bodies—including breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies—in a two-day solo show (19-20 October) at the Sagamore in Miami Beach. She has chosen 27 photographs from her ongoing series As Is, which depicts nude torsos of women, from the age of 19 into the 90s, cropped from pubic bone to chin. Gelb has shot 150 subjects since beginning the project in 2012. “I feel like I am every single one of these women,” Gelb tells the Art Newspaper in an email. “That’s why I feel so vulnerable when I share the pieces.” The two-night presentation only runs through tomorrow (20 October), but the artist says: “The short length of the show makes it feel a little bit like living theatre. Something comes alive between the work and the specific viewers that is unique to moment. It’s exciting and has a bit of urgency.” Gelb will donate ten percent of each sale to either the American Cancer Society or the mentor and scholarship programme Women of Tomorrow, buyer’s choice.
