Pope.L gets back to basics

The Chicago-based artist Pope.L is selling bottles of water for a good cause; his Flint Water Project, which is on show at the Detroit gallery What Pipeline (until 21 October), draws attention to the drinking-water scandal that has engulfed the city of Flint in Michigan. A Kickstarter fundraising page for the project explains why the artist swung into action. “In 2014, the city of Flint changed its water supply to save money. That decision and a host of subsequent and related decisions on local, state and federal levels created a crisis,” a statement says. Pope.L has bought 150 gallons of water from Flint residents and will sell 1,200 bottles of the stuff in aid of charity. The Kickstarter campaign reached its target, but there were no takers for patrons pledging £9,999 or more to get a very special reward—dinner on Pope.L’s lap. “Bring a plus one. You get the lap, the plus one’s on their own,” the blurb says.
