As all the eyes of the art world turn to Venice for the 57th Biennale (13 May-26 November) it’s the perfect opportunity for artists to make a statement. The street artist Bambi has done just that, revealing a work that highlights the climate change crisis in Venice. The Pope Gives Us Hope, which can be found on one of the doors of Ospizio Foscolo Santa Lucia, Fondamenta Sant’Anna in the Castello district, shows Pope Francis reaching out to a polar bear in a capsizing boat, and reflects on the pontiff's call to end environmental destruction in a speech at the Catholic church’s World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in September last year. Bambi, who is described as a “long-term environmentalist” in a press statement, was also inspired by the award-winning documentary Before the Flood directed by Fisher Stevens and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. An exhibition of Bambi’s work is currently on show at the Venice in a Bottle Gallery on via Garibaldi near the Giardini (9 May-25 June).
