Shanghai gets with the Beatz

Art met music last month when the No Commission project by the music producer, DJ and art collector Kasseem Dean made its debut in China. Each night of the Bacardi-sponsored event at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre during Shanghai Fashion Week attracted around 2,000 guests (mostly selfie-snapping fashionistas), the organisers say. “Most potential spaces were more underground, but I like how the artists take over the palace,” says Dean, who goes by the name Swizz Beatz, referring to the palatial building. Participating Chinese artists included aaajiao, Tian Xiaolei and Miao Ying. Previous No Commission events in Miami, New York and London were billed as an alternative form of art fair, whereby artists retain 100% of the proceeds from sales, generating a total of $3m, according to the organisers (the Shanghai project was, however, a non-selling event). “I’m not a gallery or a broker, just a platform—I don’t have to follow the rules,” Swizz Beatz sayz.
