The Wiener Werkstätte (WW), the applied art group founded in Vienna in 1903 by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, had an illustrious customer base, according to an exhibition of book covers by WW artists and craftsmen at MAK, Vienna’s museum of art and design (until 28 May). Regular WW customers included Gustav Klimt and Adele Bloch-Bauer (who sat for his Lady in Gold), as well as the fashion designer (and Klimt’s lover) Emilie Flöge, who created many of the dresses that appear in Klimt’s paintings. Bloch-Bauer was a particular fan, making a dozen purchases of WW products between 1903 and 1910, including writing paper designed by Richard Teschner, book bindings from Moser and a wastepaper basket by Hoffmann.
