A feminist debate kicked off on Facebook after the announcement of a show organised by the Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset at König Galerie in Berlin. The Others (until 22 January 2017) presents 15 works by 12 artists, including Kris Martin and Ron Mueck, but just two of the artists are female. The South African artist Candice Breitz was not impressed, saying: “Great show, but one woman only is a tough swallow.” Michael Elmgreen responded: “True, but we actually requested works on loan from several female artists, including [Katharina] Fritsch’s black monk, which we unfortunately didn’t get from the collectors.” But he did take Breitz’s point. “There are actually two women included: Tacita [Dean] and Aidan [Salakhova]. However, I agree in general and I can assure you that we will be aware of this problem when curating the next Istanbul Biennial,” he said, referring to the duo’s highly anticipated curatorial stint in Turkey next year.
