Cao Fei takes the wheel for BMW

The Chinese artist Cao Fei is the latest aesthete to design a BMW Art Car (Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein are among the famous names who have painted on the manufacturer’s racing cars in the past). Cao’s custom-designed vehicle, the 18th in the series, is due to roll off the conveyor belt next year. “My BMW Art Car will adopt an expressive form completely different from previous ones. It will be an interpretation of the century’s theme, namely that we enter ‘a landscape of no man’s land’ [via] autonomous cars and aircraft and virtual reality,” she says. A spokeswoman for BMW says that Cao’s car will “participate in a racing event in Asia and be exhibited in a major museum”. Vroom vroom.
