Barnebys, the online search engine for fine art and antiques on the market, has launched its service in Hong Kong as a “stepping stone” into mainland China. The founders of the website, which lists items available through 1,600 auction houses and 500 dealers, say that they have signed up the Hong Kong-based auctioneers Marchance and Baldwin’s. Pontus Silfverstolpe, the founder and head of content at Barnebys, says that he expects there to be between 20 million and 25 million Chinese buyers and sellers over the next five years. “It is time for Barnebys to feed the Chinese dragon with the world’s collated art, design, antiques and collectibles,” he says. Barnebys was founded in Sweden in 2011.
