The Bronx Museum of the Arts will renovate its aging facilities.
The renovation, which will not include an expansion and is expected to be done by 2020, will be overseen by Monica Ponce de Leon, dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University and co-curator of the United States Pavilion for the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture, which opens this week.
"The project will enable us to better serve our growing audience and better integrate our facility into its home on the Grand Concourse, enlivening our presence on the street and in the community," the museum's director, Holly Block, said in a statement.
The museum has not had a facelift since its expansion in 2006, which greatly added to its exhibition space. In total, the current project is expected to cost around $25m, and will be funded through the public New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The museum emphasised that all renovations will be made within its current footprint, which bucks a trend: between 2007 and 2014, U.S. museums spent $5bn on expansions.
