Seven museums clustered around one street in Naples are joining forces to boost cultural tourism in the city’s historic centre. An initiative launched last month aims to rebrand Via Duomo as Via dei Musei, Museums Street. Visitors buying full-price tickets at one venue will be eligible to receive discounts at the other six until 21 June.
The project is a further boost for the Museo Filangieri, which reopened in full last December after a 16-year closure. The museum is home to an eclectic collection of paintings, decorative arts and arms assembled by the Neapolitan nobleman Gaetano Filangieri and donated to the city in the late 19th century. The maiolica floor, Old Master paintings and wooden decorations in the central Sala Agata were restored with €600,000 from the Campania regional government.
For Maria Piera Leonetti, the president of Salviamo il Museo Filangieri, a local association that supports the museum, the new initiative is “a way to bring a little more movement” to Naples’s culturally rich but underfunded smaller institutions.
The association is due to launch a fundraising campaign to conserve the museum’s Renaissance ashlar façade and Japanese armour collection later this year.
