The race is on to jump on the David Bowie bandwagon. Since he died, aged 69, in January, the musician has become something of a cause célèbre for all and sundry in the art world. Bonhams, for instance, organised a charity auction in London last month to benefit the Chiva Africa HIV charity. The sale featured Beezy Bailey and Norman Catherine—“David Bowie’s favourite artists”, apparently. In a statement, the auction house says: “Bailey, a prominent South African artist, met Bowie in 1995, when Bailey invited the star to lunch at his house in the hills around Cape Town. It was there that they spontaneously began painting together.” Who knew? Meanwhile, Marlborough Contemporary in London is staging the group show So I Turned Myself to Face Me (until 30 April), which takes its title from Bowie’s song Changes. The Thin White Duke would no doubt have been beside himself at the accolades.
