With so many art anniversaries in Dubai this year, the Dubai Photo Exhibition is a new addition to the cultural calendar and has the backing of the Crown Prince of Dubai, no less. Held in a purpose-built, temporary museum in the Dubai Design District (d3), the exhibition includes works by artists from 23 countries selected by 18 curators, including the Emirati photographer Jassim Al Awadh and the London gallerist Zelda Cheatle, who is the chief curator of the exhibition. There are lectures, symposia and workshops alongside the show, which is organised under the auspices of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA), a major prize that was launched in 2011. HIPA’s fifth season awards ceremony, based on the theme of happiness, will take place on 14 March.

• Dubai Photo Exhibition, 16-19 March, Dubai Design District, Ras Al Khor Road, Dubai
