Every little thing Sting buys is auction magic

Sting must be walking in fields of gold after his auction at Christie’s today, 24 February, soared above its high estimate of £1.9m to make £2.5m, or £3m with fees. The most expensive lot was an abstract painting by the British Modernist Ben Nicholson from 1955, which more than doubled its low estimate to sell for £850,000 (£1m with premium). The singer, who is clearing out his multi-million pound mansion ahead of a move to Battersea Power Station, also sold the Steinway grand piano he used while working on The Labyrinth, If On A Winter’s Night and The Last Ship. The piano fetched £95,000 or £116,500 with fees. Sting and his wife Trudie Styler have reportedly sold their nine-bedroom home for £19m and appear to be downsizing south of the river. Perhaps the pair, who are known for their yogi ways, will now invest their money in something a little more esoteric?
