Absolut Art Bars seem to pop up everywhere these days. The latest incarnation, courtesy of the Mexican artist duo Sangree, neatly mixes quirky ancient and modern aspects. This new bar, entitled Tenochtitlan, is on display at the Material Art Fair, Mexico City (Expo Reforma, until 6 February). Sangree, otherwise known as René Godínez Pozas and Carlos Lara, have taken over an abandoned building with their homage to the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, transporting 21st-century guests back to 15th-century Mexico. Large-scale columns mimic ancient architecture, assorted sculptures and relics double up as archaeological artefacts and a series of Artist Cocktails made with Aztec spices such as hibiscus, chili, and cacao add to the age-old vibe. The best bit, however, must be the method of payment, as visitors are given tokens resembling cocoa beans—Tenochtitlan’s ancient currency—to trade for drinks.
