Go figure: waterfall of numbers to cascade down Hong Kong skyscraper

The annual light installation projected across the jaw-dropping International Commerce Centre (ICC) building in Hong Kong’s harbour is a high point in the city’s art calendar. Last year, the Chinese multimedia artist Cao Fei bagged the Art Basel commission, stopping city dwellers in their tracks with his Same Old, Brand New work, which included icons from 1980s video games such as Pac Man. This year, the baton (or light sabre) passes to the Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima who will present his Time Waterfall piece every night, from 21 to 26 March, across the 490-metre-high ICC to coincide with Art Basel Hong Kong (24-26 March, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center). The numbers one to nine will run down the face of the building, never reaching zero. “The continuous counting down symbolises life, while the zero implied by the extinction of light acts as a metaphor for death,” says a statement.
