With the holidays past, a familiar sight in New York in January is the stacks of discarded Christmas trees left on the curb for collection. But rather than let the winter blues set in, the artist Michael Neff has extended the life of some of these fine firs with the room-sized Suspended Forest at the Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens. Neff has created the installation twice previously in unauthorised spots under the BQE highway in Williamsburg, but those were removed by the city within days, Neff says. The artist seems to have found Queens to be a more welcoming borough, with his veritable arboretum installed in a former door factory turned exhibition space from 9 to 31 January, allowing visitors to stroll through the urban woods for the whole month. “Paired with the subtle pine fragrance of the trees and the opportunity for quiet contemplation, the exhibition encourages repeated viewing,” the artist says in a statement.
