Hastings enlists artists to mark 1066 and all that

The artists Marcus Harvey and Fiona Banner are among the luminaries taking part in Root 1066, a festival of exhibitions and specially commissioned works to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in October. Harvey’s show at the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings will focus on the seaside town’s “heroes and villains”, while Chris Levine, known for his 3D portrait of Kate Moss, will orchestrate a large-scale “sound and light event” on the beach. But the cheekiest highlight must be Hastings Museum and Art Gallery’s show The Story of Hastings in 66 Objects, which sounds like a seaside version of the BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 Objects, made by the British Museum’s outgoing director Neil MacGregor.
