Artists aged over 80 are all the rage. The Cuban centenarian Carmen Herrera has a show late next year at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and 84-year-old Alice Mackler caused a stir with her rough-hewn, lively ceramic female figures at the Nada fair in Miami Beach earlier this month. “With their lumpy forms, they call to mind ancient fertility sculptures,” says a spokesperson for her gallery, Kerry Schuss of New York. Seven works dating from 2015 were available at the fair, priced between $6,000 and $12,000.
