The Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation honoured the Miami collector Rosa De La Cruz and Alex Gartenfeld, the chief curator of the city’s Institute of Contemporary Art, at its Knight Arts Challenge Miami Awards Ceremony on Monday. In total, the evening saw the foundation dispense $2.36m to 53 projects across the city. Gartenfeld gave his $25,000 award to the artist-run galleries Guccivuitton and Central Fine, the artist Tomm El-Saieh and the Miami Rail newspaper. De La Cruz’s $50,000 went to students from Miami’s Design Architecture Senior High School. “A lot of these people have never met a philanthropist before; a lot of them didn’t even have chequebooks,” says the collector Dennis Scholl, who works closely with the foundation.
