I spy Caravaggio

The London-based city trader Andy Ash is a man on a mission: to see in the flesh every painting by Caravaggio in public collections worldwide. He set off on his three-week odyssey in September, visiting 28 institutions in 50 cities across Europe and the US. Ash faced a few challenges, telling AI magazine, for instance, that “pinning down exactly where every non-debatable, authentic Caravaggio is has at times been akin to herding cats”. The financial cost was high (“it was a lot cheaper when I set off”, he tells us), but the rewards were priceless, as Ash describes his euphoria when sitting alone for 20 minutes in front of the Supper of Emmaus at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. Find out more in his book, Carry on Caravaggio, which is due to be published next year.
