It’s official: the Vatican will join the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg as a forum for The Art Newspaper’s 25th anniversary debate, What Is Art For? We don’t think we can aim as high as Pope Francis as one of our speakers, but there is a cardinal with an excellent understanding of contemporary art, who has dismissed 99% of 20th- and 21st-century religious art as unfit for purpose, whom we are quietly confident of getting. The other speakers will be drawn from the rest of Italy.
