Art comes to aid of Syrian refugees

The Greek artist Stelios Faitakis has created an eye-catching work inspired by Byzantine icons in aid of Syrian refugees. Prints of The New Wave (2015) can be bought at the stand of his Athens-based gallery, The Breeder (FL, H14), for £100 (limited edition of 250). “The response has been great; we have sold 20 so far,” the gallery’s George Vamvakidis told us within hours of Frieze London opening to invited guests yesterday. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross on the Greek island of Chios. Vamvakidis said that the artist’s image of refugees in a burning dinghy is planned to be the cover image of the art edition of Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung magazine next month.
