There is no easy solution to Middle East puzzle

Artist's interactive work found in unlikely setting of VIP lounge at Frieze

An interactive work of art addresses the troubled history of the Middle East in the unlikely setting of the Deutsche Bank VIP Lounge at Frieze London. Oraib Toukan’s New(er) Middle East (2007) invites visitors to rearrange a map of the region using magnetic pieces in the shape of each country. But “you can’t solve the puzzle”, says the Deutsche Bank curator Alistair Hicks, as the pieces don’t quite fit. The work is part of a group exhibition, Beyond the Front Page, which looks at migration in the Mediterranean region.
