Stanford University spends big on all-in-one facility

Stanford University in California is due to inaugurate an $85m art and art history building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in the campus’s growing “arts district” on 6 October. The 30,000 sq. m McMurtry Building, named in honour of a $30m gift from the venture capitalist Burt McMurtry and his wife, Deedee, brings the university’s art history and studio art programmes under one roof for the first time. The facility includes lecture halls, studios, an art and architecture library, and gallery spaces. Stanford’s arts building spree is set to continue next year, when the university reopens its historic Roble Gym as an “arts gym”—a drop-in space for creative experimentation.
