Trustees, staff and supporters of the Watts Gallery near Guildford in Surrey will be swimming, cycling and sprinting this weekend (26-27 September), all in a good cause. The four-stage “Physical Energy Challenge” follows in the footsteps of the Victorian painter GF Watts; it kicks off on Saturday morning when Watts Gallery curator Nicholas Tromans, chair of trustees Richard Ormond, and Daniel Robbins, the director of Leighton House, cycle 36 miles to Watts Gallery-Artists’ village in Guildford. A 50-mile bike ride then takes the paintbrush baton from Guildford to Gilkicker Point on the South coast. Sandy Nairne, the former director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, Perdita Hunt, the Watts Gallery trust director, and Sarah Giles of Project Five IT company, will then brave the icy waters of the Solent and head for the Isle of Wight. Two Watts Gallery staff members will then run the final 18.5 miles from Ryde to Freshwater Bay. The arty marathon aims to raise money for the conservation and care of the Watts Collection, which includes more than 7,000 works.
