As governments across Europe continue to slash arts funding, a summit in Sheffield asks how philanthropists can be enticed to fill this gap. Speakers at the event, which is scheduled to take place on 12 October, include Ed Vaizey, the UK’s minister of culture, Jane Morris, the editor of The Art Newspaper, and the collectors Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Nicolas Cattelain, Sylvain and Dominique Levy and Egido and Daniel Marzona.
The summit coincides with Going Public: International Art Collectors in Sheffield, a citywide exhibition, which opened to the public on 16 September (until 12 December). Works from the four collections are presented at various venues in the city, including Sheffield Cathedral, which provides a dramatic backdrop for pieces by the Chapman brothers and Maurizio Cattelan from Sandretto’s collection.
